Head north to Assos, a super-scenic fishing village where time seems to have stopped and move northern to Fiscardo, another graphic fishing settlement where hundreds of sailing boats anchor during summer. Explore Svoronata with its colourful gardens and neoclassical buildings or head south to Poros, a small village nestled within lush verdant slopes.

Must-visit sites

Kefalonia boasts two of the most beautiful caves that exist in Greece: Drogarati and Melissani lake-cave. Drogarati consists of two chambers, one of which resembles a platform adorned by stalactites and stalagmites, the Royal Chamber, and has been used as a concert venue due to its amazing acoustics. Melissani lake is a cave-lake with an open ceiling as the ground on top has collapsed; an amazing site and a beautiful boat ride through the lake. Mind to also visit Assos and St. George fortresses that offer stunning views to the Ionian Sea and the neighbouring islands.

Tradition & Gastronomy

Kefalonia shares the gastronomic tradition of Greece and, as most regions in the country, boasts some fine local delicacies, sweet or savoury, and several local products. Try the sweet snack “mandoles” made with sugar and almonds distinguished for its dark red colour, the “pastokidono” a sweet resembling marmalade with smashed fruit, honey and roasted almonds, the famous grilled tuna, the cod pie and “bourbourelia”, a soup with mixed beans. The savoury dishes are best combined with the local wine variety, Robola. Of course, throughout the island you will have the chance to taste various typical Ionian and Greek dishes.
